Components for Effective, Safe Use of the Ball Mill To load the mill jar optimally, fill it half full of a dense media such as 1/2 inch lead balls. 50 caliber muzzle loading bullets will work, but they are soft and will both wear down over time and leave lead dust in whatever it is you are milling. It39;s better to antimony hardened 1/2 inch diameter lead balls, made specifically for pyrotechnic ball milling.

Posted December 29, 2012. I would suggest that you build a rod mill if you want to get the material down to a fine power, a ball mill usually is used to make bigger item smaller, e.g. big rocks down to little rocks, and then the material goes into a rod mills to take it down to a powder.
